Apparently, one of our neighbors has a pet chicken (are we legally allowed to have chickens in Atwater?!). We met her when while we were out walking yesterday, and I just happened to have my camera. She was pretty friendly, and we chased her out of the road and back into her yard. I would maybe like some big city chicken pets (only for petting, not for eating).

awww! i love chickens. i think maybe once i'm grown up/have a house or whatever, i would like to have a few... but i don't know what i'd do with the eggs? (my understanding is they kinda have to lay them.) what would you do, give them to friends?
ReplyDeletetamara - no idea what I would do with the eggs! I hadn't thought that far ahead! Probably give them away, or figure out what chickens do naturally when they have unfertilized eggs. Good question!
ReplyDeleteJason has been talking about getting chickens for about a months now... perhaps we should move to Atwater b/c I'm pretty sure we can't have them in Dana Point ;-)

Hi -
ReplyDeleteyep, that's our chicken.
Her name is Pickles, and she is indeed "pretty friendly" (maybe a little too friendly). She's a pet, and one of the benefits is that she does lay eggs (one Jumbo brown a day). We eat them (we'll never eat her!), they are delicious . . .
We are trying to teach her that she's not to go out in the street, but the lure of the yokels across the street putting out seed (and their darn lunch scraps) for the pigeons is like a magnet.....mostly she stays in our yard (or our next door neighbors (who are very tolerant)
stupid pickles!!!!
ReplyDeletegaaaaaahhhh what the hell was she doing in the street! bad chicken!!!
